The Boyle Special, a 1938 Maserati 8.C.T.F. (chassis no. 3032), stands as the most successful automobile campaigned at the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Purchased by Michael “Umbrella Mike” Boyle in 1939, it was prepared by mechanic Harry W. “Cotton” Henning for the prestigious race. The car notably won the Indianapolis 500 twice (1939 and 1940) with Wilbur Shaw behind the wheel, and achieved additional podium finishes including two third places and a fourth.
Designed by Italian manufacturer Maserati for grand prix and Indianapolis competition, the 8.C.T.F. featured a supercharged 3-liter straight-eight engine delivering approximately 350-366 hp. Its advanced design included a lightweight aluminum body on a box beam frame, four-speed manual transmission, and innovative suspension and braking systems.
The car’s racing history was nearly ended in 1941 when a wire wheel failure caused a crash while Shaw was leading; however, the vehicle was repaired and prepared for future races until World War II postponed competitions. After the war, it continued to race, further solidifying its place as a motorsport legend.
Today, the Boyle Special is recognized for its enduring significance in racing history, being archived by the Historic Vehicle Association and preserved for posterity, symbolizing the golden era of American motorsport.
